Installing Linux on VirtualBox - Part 2

Hi Friends,

Continuing from Part 1, We shall now dive into the details of installing Ubuntu JeOS.

Choose the Install JeOS On your System option as shown below




Next wait until you the screen as shown below

Choose English as the language






Next choose India as the Country as shown below





Next Choose the Keyboard Layout, Choose No as shown below




Next Choose USA as the default keyboard Layout and hit enter twice as shown below




Next it will begin the Hardware detection as shown below





Please remain patient.

Next enter a hostname: I am entering ITK as shown below



Choose Continue.

You will now be presented with the Hard disk partitioning.

As newbies to Linux, I would sincerely recommend choosing  Guided Partitioning as shown below





Next choose the default and click continue




Hit Enter to continue

Now Choose Yes to write changes to disk as shown below.




It will create and format the partitions as needed. This will assign the "/" -> root filesystem and the swap area.

The install will now begin


Finally after



Next after the install completes, enter a Full Name , I gave ITK.



Choose Continue

You will next get a username, itk will be the default.

Next enter a password for your system.

You will now be prompted to enter your Password twice.


Once you have completed this step, the next step is to setup the Ubuntu APT download URL method.

By default, choose Continue and hit enter.

It will now say, scanning Mirror, if your internet is on, it will download from the Ubuntu Repositories updates as shown below.





Next it will install the GRUB Boot Loader for your Linux system to boot as shown below.



and finally you will get a screen that informs you whether you wish to set the TimeZone to UTC.

By Default, better to choose YES


Finally you will get the installation completion screen as shown below




Congratulations!

You have now installed Linux in a Virtualized Environment.

Upon a reboot you should see a screen as shown below

Installing Linux on VirtualBox - Part 1

Hi Friends,

In this blog entry, I will show you how to install a basic Linux OS to help you get started.

And yes, you don't need a full blown distro. We will achieve this use a bare metal Linux Distro called Just Enough OS (Pronounced Juice)

My personal favorite has always been Ubuntu as it was the first linux distro , I started.

You can download Ubuntu JeOS. This is based on Hardy Heron 8.04


To download JeOS

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/jeos/releases/8.04/release/jeos-8.04.3-jeos-i386.iso


After downloading it, perform the steps as shown below

1) Launch VirtualBox

2) You will get a screen similar shown below



3) Click on the New Button

4) Now click next and enter the details as shown below. Under the OS Type choose Linux and version choose Ubuntu




5) Next choose the memory you wish to allocate, you can choose between the default 384 MB to 1024 MB, as shown below




6) Next you can choose the Hard disk.  Leave the default 8GB as default as shown below.
Click next to continue.



Follow the wizard and choose Dynamically expanding storage.

Follow the wizard and hit Finish.

7) You will now get a screen as shown below

 


You will now need to make one last change before we start our VM.

Click on the Storage Link.

Make sure you click on the CD Section and click on the Folder icon as shown below

 

8) After clicking on the folder icon, you will be given an option to choose an ISO image.
Click on the Add button, navigate to the directory where you have downloaded the Ubuntu JeOS ISO.

Your settings can be shown below



9) Now click on Select and close the screen. Finally click on OK to close the Settings Screen.

10) Now click on the Start Button .

11) Now the first thing you will see is the Linux Splash which asks you to choose a language as shown below.

Choose English





Next Click on Install Ubuntu JeOS as shown below
